When I first started out in photography I quickly realized that I wanted to do both photo and video. Over time I came to the realization that video isn’t for me. Here’s my reasoning why!
Doing both photography and videography is quite hard. While they both are in the same ballpark both are quite easily some of the most different field you can be in. With photography I feel as though I’m capturing a moment that may never happen again. With video on the other hand I feel as though I’m creating moments more often than not and my work always seems very disorganized since instead of one photo or even a set of photos I have to worry about matching up shots, color correction, composition, as well as audio.
Photography is one of my passions for a reason and I believe me creating videos stopped me from fully expressing my creative self with photography. I have a philosophy which I believe to be that one person only has a limited amount of creative juice and if they split it between two concentrations the end product might not be as good.
One of the career paths that I plan to go down is wedding photography and hear me out on why I’m specifying myself to a niche like this. In video there are many different jobs that someone can do on a video set or shoot while with photography its most of the time the photographer and the subject. With wedding photography it adds a layer of interest as you have two subjects and infinite possibilities every single time. Video on the other hand feels very limiting and much harder to create something as meaningful.
For example this video below is why I feel as though video is not for me.
While it might seem like a gorgeous video, I painstakingly had to figure out everything and plan a lot more to just create a 57 second clip. With photography I lose the stress of that and am able to create photos that would possibly be better as a whole than whatever video I could make.
While I do agree both photo and video can go hand in hand, I notice a lot of people nowadays try to do both and then do a mediocre job at one of the two. So in my opinion you should specialize, and therefore why I picked wedding photography as my goal career.
